چکیده

I . Iron metabolism was studied during lactation in the rabbit by the intravenous injection of 59Fe in order to measure plasma Fe turnover, Fe transfer to the milk and Fe absorption by the suckling young. 2. Although the plasma and red cell volumes were elevated in the lactating animal a significant increase of plasma Fe turnover was not demonstrated. 3 . Between 2.5 and 11.5 yo of the injected dose of 50Fe appeared in the milk during the following 2-3 weeks. Secretion into the milk continued for at least 2 weeks, and the specific activity of Fe was higher in milk than in plasma, suggesting that the mammary gland contained a pool of Fe, with a low turnover rate from which milk Fe was derived. On the average, 1 5 0 3 1 5 ,ug Fe were secreted in the milk per day. 4. Almost all the 50Fe ingested by suckling rabbits, either in milk or sodium chloride solution, was absorbed. 5. It is concluded that in the rabbit the relatively small increase of body Fe which occurs during suckling is entirely due to the limited supply of Fe available in the milk. The high concentration of Fe-binding protein present in rabbit milk did not appear to aid Fe transfer into the milk or to affect Fe absorption by the young.

The effects of post-partum drops in body condition on indices of energy metabolism in mid-lactation Holstein cows

Background: Evaluation of energy metabolism indices in mid-lactation Holstein cows is critical to monitor health status. Aims: The objective of this study was to assess the effects of low (≤0.75) vs. high (>0.75) drops in body condition score (BCS) until day 60 post-partum on energy metabolism indices during mid-lactation in Holstein cows. Meth...

Leptin gene in rabbit: cloning and expression in mammary epithelial cells during pregnancy and lactation.

Leptin is known as a cytokine mostly produced by fat cells and implicated in regulation of energy metabolism and food intake but has also been shown to be involved in many physiological mechanisms such as tissue metabolism and cell differentiation and proliferation. In particular, leptin influences the development of mammary gland. Although leptin expression in mammary gland has been studied in...

بررسی نقش ارکسین A در دوره بارداری و شیردهی و سندرم مرگ ناگهانی نوزاد: مروری سیستماتیک

Background and Objectives: Adipose tissue plays a role in releasing hormones including orexin, that regulates energy metabolism, nutrition, body weight, control system, autonomic, sleep, insulin sensitivity, breathing, drug addiction ,and reproductive axis. The pregnancy is associated with a series of metabolic changes that provide energy and nutrients for mother and fetus. Orexin increases ins...

Effects of cadmium intake on bone metabolism of mothers during pregnancy and lactation.

Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal that exists ubiquitously in the environment, and it interacts with essential elements such as zinc, copper, iron, and calcium (Ca). Particularly, Cd interferes with Ca and vitamin D metabolism in bone kidney and intestine. The interaction between Cd and Ca in bone, intestine, and kidney may result in the disorder of bone metabolism. On the other hand, pregnancy and...

The effect of iron deficiency on the temporal changes in the expression of genes associated with fat metabolism in the pregnant rat

Iron is essential for the oxidative metabolism of lipids. Lipid metabolism changes during gestation to meet the requirements of the growing fetus and to prepare for lactation. The temporal effects of iron deficiency during gestation were studied in female rats fed complete or iron-deficient diets. Plasma triglycerides were elevated in the iron-deficient group throughout gestation. There were ti...
